PTFE

Extreme Chemical Resistance and Temperature Performance, Enhanced with Fillers

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) has exceptional chemical, electronic, mechanical and thermal properties for a multitude of applications. It is resistant to nearly all chemicals and has a temperature service range from -196°C (-320°F) to 260°C (500°F). Perhaps the most useful characteristic of PTFE is that it can be filled with other materials to add desired properties. The most common fillers are glass fiber, carbon, bronze and graphite.

Glass Fiber

Fill percentages vary by weight between 5 and 40%. Within this range, wear properties are improved and there is also an increase in deformation strength. Adding glass, however, increases PTFE’s coefficient to friction and its resistance to alkalis and hydrofluoric acid.

Carbon

Fill percentages vary by weight between 10 to 35%. Carbon with graphite improves PTFE’s wear and deformation strength properties. Because of carbon’s conductive properties, it is suitable for applications that require higher thermal conductivity and becomes static dissipative due to its electrical conductivity. Modified electronic properties are the result of carbon/graphite fills.

Bronze

Fill percentages vary by weight between 40 to 60%. By adding bronze to virgin PTFE, maximum wear properties are attained. Bronze filled PTFE also offers greatly improved deformation strengths and good thermal conductivity, but results in poor electrical characteristics and chemical resistance.

Graphite

Fill percentages vary by weight between 5 to 15%. Graphite, most often used in conjunction with other PTFE fillers, lowers the coefficient of friction due to its self-lubricating properties. It also improves deformation strength and offers a slight improvement in wear properties.
